“Luxury Beliefs" | The feminist case for marriage

Lack of marriage most effects poor people; in a bad way.

People on the left should be supporting marriage, for its benefits to poor women, and children of broken homes. But they mock marriage, which Louise Perry calls a “luxury belief”. Why? Because elites get and stay married at a higher rate than the less well off, while mocking the concept of marriage. “Luxury belief”:  I call it hypocrisy. It feels good to hold that “radical” view of marriage. Marriage; for me, but not for thee.

Louise Perry writes for the New Statesman, a magazine of the Left. She’s interviewed by Fraser Nelson, editor of The Spectator, a magazine of the centre-right.

ADDED: having been involved in two and a half of them, I’m a big fan of marriage.
