Monitoring the pandemic | One step forward, two steps back

Shanghai opens up. Step forward. Hong Kong cancels at-home quarantine. Two steps back.

Please note:the effectiveness of Shanghai lockdowns is unfalsifiable. Would it have been the same -- rapid increase in cases, rapid decline in cases -- had they not had a draconian lockdown? I say, yes, based on the experience elsewhere, whether or not there were lockdowns. The Shanghai authorities will think no: that it was all their brilliance in handling it that reduced the cases. That’s an unfalsifiable claim. And therefore, when there’s another jump in cases, it’ll be lockdowns all over again.

Meantime, we’re twitching here in Hong Kong. Twitching every time there’s a blip in cases. Used to be that people could quarantine at home. Now, once again,  they have to quarantine at a “facility”. Basically a 40-foot container with dodgy plumbing. Great.

While here it’s still labelled at “Coronavirus crisis” (see above), then the government wonders why everyone is scared.
