"Decent but downcast"?

Dear Mr Stephens,
Am I one of those, that you describe as "decent but downcast"?  ("Demagogues reach beyond bigotry", Financial Times, 7 October).
A lifelong Labor voter (in Oz) I find the Left now bereft of principle when it comes to Islam, Islamism and jihad.
You say "There is no easy blueprint to rebuild trust". How about those elites in government and media treat seriously the concerns about Islam and Muslim immigration of the horrid "populists"?
After all, Islam (or Islamism, if you must) is inimical to all of which the Left is supposed to be in favour: free speech, freedom of conscience, equal rights for women, gays and ethnic minorities.
