“Perhaps the TV show Expats did not portray Hong Kong as it likes. So what? | Alice Wu

Nicole Kidman in Expats
Some people got upset that Expats — with Nicole Kidman, shot in Hong Kong during Covid — shows an unfair view of our city. To which I'd said "so what", it's a work of fiction. And so says Alice Wu.

It shows the "privileged lifestyle" of expats, apparently (I’ve not seen it). Well, they do live (we do live) privileged lives, less than decades ago perhaps, but many still. We're called "expats" (Gweilos in Cantonese) and we do live a comfortable-cum-privileged lives in Hong Kong.

Last two paras in the story: The comments by our CEO John Lee are disturbing: the increasing amount of his "commie speak". He talks of "inappropriate speech", ffs. Talking of "soft resistance", ffs. It's these sorts of things make people outside Hong Kong think we're losing our freedoms. The passing of a new Article 23 anti-sedition legislation won't help.
