Net, net, it’s the net.
But the HK government — without any enquiry — is blaming the bamboo scaffolding. Why? Because the Green Netting came from Shandong in China. And was used against the wishes of others in the Home Owners Association. Why? Because it was cheaper and some members of the HOA were getting kickbacks from the Shandong netting supplier. Allegedly. Yet the netting complied only Chinese fire retardant standards, which are - allegedly, again - lower than the British ones traditionally used in Hong Kong.
China wants Hong Kong to be closer to its building codes so that it can do more construction here. That means moving to using metal scaffolding. So, blame the bamboo! Boo!
It’s a rotten story. Of corruption. And of our pusillanimous government bending the knee to Beijing. Before even a pretence of an enquiry.
Shame on them all. For the net result is not going to be a safer Hong Kong.
It’s going to be one with yet more compliance with Beijing and yet less safe for our citizens.
