Simon Leys was the pen name of Pierre Rickmans. I knew him in my China days.

This reminds me of an essay, titled Cigarettes Are Sublime, by Simon Leys, the wonderful Belgian sinologist and literary essayist who lived most of his adult life in Australia and who has just died (he was my hero). 'Every time I see one of those threatening labels on a packet of cigarettes,' he wrote, 'I feel seriously tempted to start smoking again.'
