BBC iWorld Service on the Melbourne lockdown

Where many friends and rellies…

While in Hong Kong the new National Security Law is being implemented with a heavy hand. Public service announcement on radio tell us soothingly that it will affect only a “very small minority of people” which is in itself scary for those of us who recall this was the very wording used by Maoists in the cultural revolution.
Just in the last two days: disqualifying a dozen pan-Dems from the September LegCo election and today delaying the election and also seeking, under the NSL, five pro-democracy activists who are now overseas. They are called “troublemakers”, another creepy bit of Beijing-speak.
Carrie: enough already! (Though that should be addressed to Beijing, no doubt. In which case deaf ears is the phrase of the day).
