Great Minds: Thomas Sowell the Great

Click above for the video
One of Thomas Sowell's thoughts that stays in my mind:

There are no solutions; only trade-offs

Think about it. True and powerful.

This thought played a part in his photography. If you reduce the f-stop, you get more depth-of-field, but less light. And vice versa. Neither makes the photo “better” or is a “solution”. Just different.

We could have avoided some of the forest wildfires, if only we’d worked on that principle. That there are no solutions only trade-offs. One of the trade-offs being to have wide and clear fire break roads and selective logging, with clearing away of dead timber. Less space for small critters to find a home; but less likelihood that they’ll be incinerated in a bushfire. No solution. But a decent trade-off: between animal welfare and devastating fires.

I’ve been a Thomas Sowell fan-boy for many years. Read many of his books. We are lucky he’s still with us, in his mid nineties, and still writing.

Cannot recommend his writings and occasional appearances on YouTube, highly enough.

Introduced by Jason Riley, another I’ve followed for some time and read a number of his books. One titled “Dear Liberal friends: please stop helping us!”. Scatters the film with some lovely Sowell Quotes. Which reminds me that there’s a “Sowell Quotes” account on Twitter (X).
