And other myths about China-US. Importantly, about Taiwan. David Goldman counsels the status quo, which I’ve done here for years. Don’t push for independence. That will only trigger China. And war gamers agree with Goldman: a war with China would likely have China win. How can that be good for anyone? Least of all Taiwanese.  Let’s leave this sleeping dog lie. Don’t even pat it. That’s where we worry about Biden’s casual gung-ho ness.

That we don’t want any silly — unnecessary— adventurism in. Like the silly Pelosi stunt, visiting Taiwan back in August. Done for home consumption but with real world foreign impacts. Wars often start with miscalculation. We have to be very careful.

Our 2019 demonstrations here in HK came to grief when they started demanding “independence”. Anything but that, we said. They didn’t listen. Beijing clamped down. The Taiwan issue is immeasurably more consequential. Leave it be.
