The old McCarthyism, from the 1950s was all about finding commies under the bed. And McCarthy found plenty, especially in Hollywood. Oppenheimer got caught up. In those days the lawyers were quick to jump to their defence.

Todays McCarthyism, according to Alan Dershowitz, is to target anyone who defends Trump, even if they don’t support Trump. But no lawyers come to their defence. To the defence, that is, of the rule of law. Of the principles from John Adams, that everyone is entitled to a defence, no matter their views. Dershowitz is a big John Adams fan. His lodestar is the Constitution. Not one party or the other. Though he’s a classic liberal and has always voted Democrat.
