“The cost of courage” | Jason Wordie and “speaking truth to power”

Jason Wordie, from today’s South China Morning Post Magazine. The White Rose anti-Nazi movement in Hitler’s Germany, paid for their bravery with their lives.

Reminds me of the time Robert De Niro stood in front of an Oscar crowd in Hollywood a few years back and said “Fuck Trump!”. Giddy applause, standing ovation. Next day articles about how De Niro has “spoken truth to power”. How “brave” he was. The media and Hollywood luvvies had so conflated Trump with Hitler that De Niro throwing out a thoroughly gratuitous insult in front of an adoring crowd was seen as “brave”!

What would have been truly brave would have been if De Niro had told this crowd “you know what? Trump isn’t so bad”. Now there’s bravery! He’d have been met with hissing and booing, no doubt,  which he would have had to face… bravely! But still… not the guillotine, as (literally) befell the White Rose anti-Nazis.

Todays culture — on both sides, but especially, it seems to me, on the Left — has become hyper hyperbolic. Everything is Nazi, when it isn’t. Everything is fascist when it isn’t. Goodness! they can’t even spell fascism (it’s often “facism”), let alone know what it means.

The other day on The View, five liberal women talking current affairs, Sunny Hostin said “they’re locking up those … whatever… Muslims, where is it?… in Afghanistan, right?”, when what she meant was the Uyghurs in China’s Xinjiang province. She’s paid mozza money by ABC to talk about current events! Yet appears — grotesquely— unaware that Afghanistan is a Muslim country or that it’s China locking up Uyghur Muslims. Heaven help us, the level of ignorance! Yet the level of self-adulation of the likes of De Niro, pompously fanning his virtue-vanity like de Nero of old.
