The other night Jing took a taxi with a driver who was shaking in anger at China, the government, the police. It was the government which was responsible for shop and subway closures, not the rioters. He also says France will come to support Hong Kong “freedom protesters”, because he’d just heard some statement by Macron. Good luck with that. Turns out quite a few think that way. Hallucination and hysteria.
Anyway, the point is that Jing felt she had to speak English not Mandarin to this guy. That's becoming a common experience for mandarin speakers in Hong Kong. Good old-fashioned bigotry, is what it is. It would be racist if they weren't all Han.…
