LETTER TO NEW YORK TIMES
Alan Leung Ka-kit does a grave disservice to the Hong Kong he claims to love*. By trash-talking the "one country, two systems" (1C2S) formula and Hong Kong's legal system he weakens them both.
Why? Because in any sophisticated society principles and laws require a certain amount of trust to operate effectively. The more he talks down 1C2S, the more fragile it becomes. The more he demeans the legal system, the less faith there is in it.
We are long term residents of Hong Kong, one a lawyer one a diplomat and business owner. We do not agree with Leung's assessment that Carrie Lam has breached the Basic Law with the mask ban. And neither does the High Court.
Your readers need to know that the Civic Party in Hong Kong is radical left and bitterly antagonistic to anything the government does. Literally anything.
In this tendentious rant, Leung is the one who reveals his true face: "Please let our followers wear masks so they can trash our city with impunity". Ultimate aim: a poke in the eye to the government he hates.
