… we watched, in real time, the trashing of Tsuen Wan a few nights ago.
And yet, yesterday when shops and the MTR were closed throughout Hong Kong — the first time in our known history — people blamed the government!
Jing and I saw them trash Tsuen Wan MTR right in front of us, and we know they smashed up forty other stations. They smash the ticket machines and turnstyles with metal bars. Then they fill the entrances with junk from the street and set it alight. Freedom and Democracy! So yeah, closure is warranted.
And somehow it’s the government that’s responsible?!
Nonsense, ridiculous, stupid. The opposite of the truth.
Jing sees a bigger game at play here. Civic Party (at least) is after getting power or destroying Hong Kong in the process. So they have Human Rights lawyers who lead the charge to blame the government for anything that happens. Reminds me of the kidnapper who says “if I kill this person I’m holding to ransom, it’s your fault!”.
From our own contacts, we don’t think the majority support the protests and violence. But we’re just guessing. We really need to see some polls.
All the Chambers of Commerce certainly don’t support the riots. Well, they wouldn’t would they? After all, its bad for business. Sure. Then again, they’re employers of most Hongkongers. And create most of the wealth of Hong Kong. But what about the “ mom and pop” stores? The small and medium enterprises? Jing and I had our centres in Tsuen Wan and Shatin and Kwong Tong and Wanchai and Jordan, all places the have been trashed. What about them the little battlers there?
How can they possibly support what’s going to bankrupt them? What’s going to ruin their lives?
So I don’t get it. If it’s true…

ADDED: last night was all about protesting the law banning wearing masks. The mask supporters are basically saying “we want our supporters to trash whatever they want and face no consequences. Ok?” There we’re visibly fewer protesters as result of the mask ban, which has just found to be legal by the High Court. Good. America and France are at least two countries that have similar laws.I’m no government running dog (政府走狗). I criticise it often. But there’s no way the closures were by the government. No way. They were choices made by shops and the MTR worried about safety of staff and customers.

“It’s you that taught me peaceful protest is useless” |
Above graffiti reference to the government (allegedly) doing nothing after the 2015 protests. Actually there was a proposal for more direct lectins out forward but it was rebuffed by own democratic parties because it wasn’t perfect. They would have moved a step forward but chose to take a step back. And now blame the government.
