Tear gas on Hennessy Rd, Wanchai, where we had our first business |
… watching the chaos in Wanchai. It’s also in Wong Tai Sin (where we went to the temple in 1997 to choose John’s lucky Chinese name) and in Tuen Mun.
A CNN reporters is out on a Wanchai street, but far from the action and far from any whiff of tear gas, yet she’s kitted out in a gas mask, looking ridiculous, while people around, like me, in shorts and no mask and she’s telling CNN watchers that the the protesters are working to “save HK’s freedoms”. Really? I fail to see how. We have our seven freedoms and the protesters are imperilling them. And, says this CNN reporter lady, her voice muffled by the ludicrous mask, the protesters are fighting against Beijing “encroachment” in Hong Kong. But I’ve had no answer to the question of “where, when, how?” has Beijing done so. The question is never asked by the international media. Beijing has been hands-off. That’s the story and all this “encroachment” stuff nonsense. (TBF, that’s not 100% true but nothing like the black hands, or “claws” alleged by the Beijing haters. And certainly the question, re alleged encroachment, “where, when, how?” is never asked, let alone answered).
LATER: a protester is hit by a police bullet and is in hospital. I said the cops should unilaterally disarm to prevent just such accidents. Jing says it would only make things worse. Jing saw it and says the policeman was being attached by a long metal pole and it appeared they were trying their best to kill him, the policeman.
