Cruz and Carrie… big dopes

Here’s a story of two dopes.
Senator Ted Cruz — he who primaried against Trump in 2016 — was here yesterday:
On a brief visit to Hong Kong on Saturday, Cruz said he had met “non-violent protest leaders” and impressed upon them the need to shun violence, but insisted he himself had never heard, or seen evidence, of rioting, vandalism and mob attacks over more than four months of civil unrest in the city. [my emphasis]
Cruz may have never heard or seen any evidence of rioting, etc, but we sure have. Every weekend. Everywhere. At least he spoke out against violence, urging protesters to Gandhi and MLK.
Meanwhile our CE Carrie Lam, who he was due to meet, but cancelled, had demanded that what they talked about at the meeting be kept secret, and that he say nothing about what she’d said.  Now that is truly stupid. As Cruz said
She seems to misunderstand how free speech operates and also how freedom of the press operates.
And recently at the Town hall meeting in September 26, she refused to use the words “self rule” (港人治港) in answer to a question. But that’s always been a part of “one country two systems”. So to ditch is worrying indeed.
I still put that down to self-inflicted stupidity, not conspiracy. Still, the kids have a point. But please: make  it without wanton violence. They now need to get on, without violence, to work a way forward.
Which, for us, remains: extend the 1C2S system beyond 2047 and restart talks in universal suffrage.
For that, they need to get away from the nonsense of “leaderless revolution”. They need leaders.

ADDED: Alex Lo skewers Cruz, much better job than I did. Suggesting, as Cruz did, that Beijing is behind the violence, without evidence, is the same as suggesting, as many have, without evidence, that the CIA are behind the violence. “Cruz is clueless
