I remember Melbourne, in the middle of the world’s longest lockdowns, when people came out to protest — for their lives, for their livelihoods— the police were brutal. They pushed people over; put them in arm-locks; kicked old ladies. It was shocking. Aussie Politicians called the demonstrators “Nazis”! Yes, they did. Canada’s Justin Trudeau called trucker protesters “traitorous fascists”. Yes, he did. And shut down their bank accounts. Stole their money. Yes, he did.
Now in China, the anti-lockdown protesters are supported by these very same people as “freedom fighters”. As they should be. I’m on side with that. But a bit of consistency, just a touch, wouldn’t go astray.
By the way, this is not a regime-change-for-China moment. China’s armed state is simply too strong. The traceable digital footprints, the face-recognition technology in China, is just too powerful. Moreover they’re not protesting for more democracy (as in 1989) , but for easing Zero Covid policies.
Blumenthal’s take on China is pretty good, imo.
