There are three four nuclear power stations over the border in Guangdong, already operational which we could buy power from. Why haven’t we? Because HK power companies are afraid of the local Greens. Who continue to this day to raise scientifically illiterate fears — mainly about waste treatment (a long-solved issue).We could have had clean and reliable zero-carbon power long ago. We could have net-zero electricity already. But we don’t because of our Greens. (Who have wreaked their nuclear havoc worldwide. Well-meaning they may be, but the road to hell, etc…).
We already take power from Daya Bay nuclear power station across the border in China. I’ve visited the Daya Bay plant. When I went on a tour with the Hong Kong Classic Car Club, whose Patron is Michael Kadoorie, chairman of China Light and Power, our supplier, which buys a third of Daya Bay’s output, giving Hong Kong about a quarter of our electricity from nuclear. We use nuclear here in our Discovery Bay home — where we also have rooftop solar, courtesy major subsidies by the government.
I loved the Daya Bay station. Had I not been already pro-nuclear at the time, the visit would have converted me. On all aspects: waste treatment; counter terrorism; protection against melt-down.
I’m in favour of more nuclear power anywhere in Hong Kong. Or just buy it from China — it’s already there, we just have to agree to buy it. Yet we faff around with offshore wind. Fine, but simply cannot solve the net zero issue. Nuclear can.
