I first wrote about this here.
More on what the Chinese are calling Tang Ping — lying flat, doing nothing. The Zoomers who can’t be bothered. The phenom, if that’s what it is, is now all over the western media. From WhatsOnWeibo recently-ish. My mates in China say it's only the sons and daughters of rich parents who can afford to "lie flat" (躺平). The only children of the "one-child policy" days. The princes and princesses. The rest have to get out and struggle with life. Many in the gig economy which like the gig economies anywhere, is brutal.
It's also connected to the concept of "involution", a weird word, which became popular in China last year and was noted on China's twitter, Weibo, back in 2020. The Chinese is 内卷, nei juan. There's an article here.
And I came across an interesting take on Ann Althouses’s blog, here.
