Einat Wilf, my latest favourite commenter on matters Middle East. 

She calls herself a leftist. Because she supports a Palestinian state living beside Israel. But it has to be peaceful. It has to have overcome "Palestinianism". The desire to kill all Jews. Well, good luck with that. It won't be long before Einat becomes of the Right. As she recognises that it's a crazy dream to imagine Levantine Arabs, Southern Syrians, aka "Palestinians" will ever want to live in peace with the Jews.

Einat Wilf is a peace activist, many years working with Labour members of Israeli government. She knows whereof she speaks. And makes the strong case that the UNRWA* is the main stumbling block on the path to peace in the Middle East. Because it is run and owned, essentially, by Hamas. Its existence requires the existence of Palestinian refugees, therefore it does nothing to reduce their numbers. That’s just in the nature of incentives. 

I’ve been banging on about how awful UNRWA is, for at least a decade. The evidence of its harm is right there in front of us. We have the receipts, as we say these days. And yet nothing is done. Because of the powerful pro-Islam lobby in the United Nations. And the reluctance of western governments to be seen as uncaring and uncharitable. It’s easier just to go along with the corrupt UNRWA. At least then you can pretend to be virtuous. 

Donald Trump removed US funding for UNRWA during his presidency. That was a good move. But was excoriated on the Left. And by most countries. He would “lose US power to act as a broker” they claimed. Yet that power increased: he gave us the Abraham Accords, the most significant move towards peace in the middle east in 70 years. 

Of course the minute Joe Biden was in power, he resumed aid to this most corrupt of organisations, the UNRWA.

* UNRWA = the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. The only refugee agency in the world that is focussed on one lot of people alone, the Palestinians. It’s been going since 1949, and in that time -- 75 years !! -- the number of Palestinian refugees that it’s overseen has only risen, from under a million to now more than 5 million. As has its employees, now number some 30,000. By rights this should be classified as a major failure and should be disbanded. But it’s not; it’s seen as indispensable and any moves to disband or even restrict it are denounced. 

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, by contrast, looks after refugees from all over the world, has a smaller workforce than UNRWA and has housed and resettled millions of refugees.

This is a response to all those who think that if Hamas takes over Israel, if the Intifada does work to overthrow the Jewish state, if Islamists rule "from the River to the Sea", then all will be fine and well. That there will be a return to some pre-1948 time when apparently all was sweetness and light between Muslims and Jews in this area of the Levant. 

People believing this, calling for this, include pretty much all the Left in the west, the media, all of Europe, all the Muslim countries. ie, pretty much everyone. Including the loopy fringe group of fundamentalist Jews, the Naturei Karta, recently seen on New York streets, together with Hamas and other "Palestinians" calling for the downfall of Israel, and shouting Allahu Akbar. Go figure. 

Einat Wilf I've posted about before. She's super shart. Intelligent, eloquent. And not blinded by any false delusions about what might happen if Hamas or the PA took over. Which, to be clear, would be genocide -- and actual genocide -- of all Jews in the area, just as a first up, followed by killing all Jews and all non-Muslims they could get their hands on. 

How do I know this? Because they say so. Over and over. It's part of their founding document, the Charter of Hamas.

Carthago delenda est were the words Cato the Elder finished every speech with. "Carthage must be destroyed".

Its modern version: Qatar delende est. "Qatar must be destroyed".

We've spent so much time huffing and puffing about the dangers of Shia Iran and its "circle of fire", its proxies surrounding Israel. Its radical fundamentalist Shia Islam. But we've ignored Sunni Qatar. And its radical fundamentalist Wahhabist Taliban Sunni Islam. We've tended to see Qatar as one of the Gulf States one of the "Good Guys". But it's not. It plays a double game.

I reckon there's a couple of reasons Qatar has duped the West:

1. Money. Qatar funnels vast amounts of money to the west, to the media, to the universities, to the political systems. It's awful hard to bite the hand the offers it. 
2. Qatar Airways. They have lovely ads on major TV stations, like BBC, CNN, MSNBC. Gorgeous women, famous actresses, yummy food served at over-the-top First Class cabins. It's the first thing, I'd bet, that many of us think of, if we're asked about Qatar.

Wilf is multi-talented. She was in the Knesset, a former Intelligence Officer of the IDF's famous Unit 8200. She's also a fierce and knowledgeable critic of UNRWA, which makes her smart. Because that horrid organisation has also, like Qatar, duped the West into thinking that it actually is a refugee-supporting charity, whereas in reality it's an arm and hiding place of Hamas. Provider of viciously Jew-hating education to Palestinian kids.

None of what she says will be news to many, but Einat Wilf does a rather nice tour d'horizon, I thought. In the end it's "power over time".

Very good. My only niggle is that she failed to say that there had always been Jews in the region - both pre Zionist (say,1890s) Palestine and in the Arab world itself more widely. While small in numbers Jews never "left" either Middle East generally or the Levant specifically.

I've followed Einat Wilf for some time. (My posts about her here)

What I didn't know, till the vid above, is that she made the same mental journey in life as I have: moving from the crazy left to.... Not the Left.

If you can hack it, she goes into detail about the Israel-Palestine issue, its history, its current affair; its "then", its "now". From the POV of an insider, as she was to the Oslo Accords process, with Yasser Arafat, Bill Clinton, and Yitzhak Rabin in 1993. 

About which, by the way, Bill Clinton felt betrayed by Arafat and has talked about his bitterness at the betrayal. 

The betrayal served to wake Clinton up to the reality that the Arabs of the Levant (aka the "Palestinians") do not want any deal, any "land for peace", any "Two State solution", any "recognition". No, what they want, what their dream is: death to Israel and death to all Jews. 

That’s the truth. And of course it’s ugly. That your neighbour wants you dead. No ifs, no buts. No negotiations. Wants you dead.
