I do wonder, more than this article does, about the charging infrastructure. When we drove across Africa in 2011, you could always get some petrol. In a jerry can if needed. But what if you had an EV? You couldn’t be sure of a charging station, or if it would work. And also: what about compatibility? Even here in Hong Kong, which is very EV friendly, there are different power points for different EVs. That’s crazy. Like rocking up to a gas station and finding the nozzle doesn’t fit.
Also: it’s not the case that EVs are going to drop in price. They’re already about 50% more expensive than the equivalent ICE. But as they build more, the rare metals, the cobalt, the lithium, etc. are all going to be in tight supply.
But it’s true what it says above about the building speed in China. Elon Musk says he built his Tesla factory in China in a year. In Germany it took 5 years for him to build the same. Not sure why that has to be. But it is, for now.
