Zero-Covid policy: so bad even China is calling for “open debate”

Worth noting: China manages its GDP. If it’s looking like it might not hit a GDP target — what they do is invest, invest, invest, till they get the numbers they want. No worries about the massive overbuilding — its ghost towns and “roads to nowhere”. But even with that government “management” they can’t hit their numbers. Because of harsh lockdowns. 

And for the first time, I believe in my lifetime, China will have negative GDP growth. Who will pay the highest price for the shortfall? The poor. Middle class and government apparatchiks will be fine. China’s laptop class will be fine. It’s all the real working class, the gig workers who suffer most. But it takes a serious downturn before the elite, even in China, takes notice. 

That’s why there are now open calls — within China — for “debate” on the ZCP. Something that only last week was declared verboten by none other than Xi Jinping. Wowsers!
