Covid-19 virus update, 14 April

My spreadsheet from figures at Worldometer
Definite downtrend. HK Total = 1010. New = 4. Second day single figures.  HK hospitals at 70% capacity which is pretty normal. Government warns low number of cases might be because low testing over Easter weekend. Remain home and social distancing! Limit on gatherings to 23 April.
Hong Kong remains at the bottom of the table (ie, doing best in world) in terms of death rates and deaths per million. And recovery rate (39%).
Key: early travel restrictions (mid January), widespread masking (against the early “expert” advice from WHO), strong hygiene regime (hangover from SARS) and social distancing.  Also: excellent medical system and plenty of testing.
It’s what I call “soft lockdown”, vs the harsh lockdowns in Italy, UK, Spain, etc… we can still go out for a meal, eg.
But there is never any mention of Hong Kong by pundits talking about who’s doing well. Instead they quote Korea or Taiwan or Japan.  They’re doing ok, but none as good as Hong Kong. I guess ignoring Hong Kong success is part of hating on China. China did well (in the end) and is hated for it.

While listening to Ep 6 of Gore Vidal’s “Death in the Fifth Position”, read by Jamie Parker on Radio 4 Extra.  Now Heather Cooper and “Cosmic Consciousnesses”. All about Ancient Greek astronomers and mathematicians. Pythagoras figured out the world was a sphere in 600 BC. Some people today, 2,600 years later, believe the world is flat. Just as some dopes believe any loopy theory that floats their way on accursed social media.
