I'm a big admirer of the writing of David Sedaris. A diarist, really, writing a kind of "memoir-in-essay" format. Finely observed stories of, mostly, his own family.
He often reads his own stories to audiences around the country. I've listened to pretty much all of those, over the years, and also read all his books.
I just love the writing and wish I could write just one piece as good, or half as good, as one of his. [deep sigh...].
Wisely, Sedaris doesn't mix much of any politics in his writings. Though, tbf, it's pretty clear that when he so much as touches on something political, that his audience is overwhelmingly leftish.
And every now and then he lets slip his feelings. Like about Trump. You don't have to wonder. He's a gay New Yorker. Of course he has TDS.
Couple of things though.
In his "A Carnival of Snackery" a collection of his lifetime's diary entries, he mentions Trump in a couple of essays.
One is about Trump in his first term. He wonders how it is that the Working Class has voted for Trump. This, he thinks, is "voting against their interests". Given that the Dems were offering things like universal healthcare and minimum wages.
But he gets their motivations wrong. The working class, the ones that voted for Trump, did so because he was promising them the chance to get to work again. He did try hard to bring industry back to the United States, and talked endlessly, in his first term, about jobs, jobs, jobs. He managed to secure an increase in working class real wages by his tax cuts, which, far from being for "the oligarchs" went largely to middle and lower income cuts.
The Dems were offering hand outs. The working class wanted jobs.
Then, later, when there were riots and looting all over the country in the wake of the George Floyd killing, Sedaris fretted that this "would give talking points to Trump" in his campaign for re-election. Not that he was worried about the massive property damage, in the hundreds of Billions, and the 25+ deaths resulting; but that Trump would have a "talking point". This kind of sucks for me, just a tiny tick of a mark against David Sedaris.
It reminded me of the late, famous, comedic genius, Norm McDonald's Tweet about Islamophobia. Commenting on the fact that whenever there's some terrorist atrocity by Jihadis, the worry on the Left is "what will this do to Muslims?". That they'll be subject to more "Islamophobia"...
Said the brill Norm, on 16 December 2016:
"What terrifies me is if ISIS were to detonate a nuclear device and kill 50 million Americans. Imagine the backlash against peaceful Muslims?"
What terrifies Sedaris is that the rioting (and looting and killing) will give Trump the case to make against the "mostly peaceful" rioters. Heh!
